Count Basie at Newport

RESEÑAS
At the 1957 Newport Jazz Festival, the music was consistently inspired and often historic. Count Basie welcomed back tenor great Lester Young and singer Jimmy Rushing for part of a very memorable set highlighted by "Boogie Woogie" and "Evenin'"; Young plays beautifully throughout and Rushing is in prime form. An exciting full-length version of "One O'Clock Jump" features Young, Illinois Jacquet, and trumpeter Roy Eldridge; the Basie band stretches out on "Swingin' at Newport"; and five previously unreleased selections (put out for the first time on this CD) include four Joe Williams vocals. It's a great set of music. Scott Yanow
This 1957 performance, which united Count Basie's contemporary band with its greatest alumni, was a truly festive event that reached back to the 1930s for some of the repertoire and some of the guests. The contrasting tenors of Lester Young and Illinois Jacquet, drummer Jo Jones, trumpeter Roy Eldridge, and the great Kansas City blues shouter Jimmy Rushing are all featured, as is the band's regular vocalist, Joe Williams. The band, a great unit on its own, shines in support of Young on his trademark "Lester Leaps In," while Rushing matches the band's collective power on "Sent for You Yesterday" and "Boogie Woogie." Basie's piano sounds more inspired than usual, and the extended jam session on "One O'Clock Jump" is a triumph for Eldridge. --Stuart Broomer

88 Basie Street - Count Basie

Reseñas:
One of Basie's final albums, the very appealing title cut seems to sum up his career, a lightly swinging groove with a strong melody. Two small-group performances with guest Joe Pass on guitar and the tenor of Kenny Hing add variety to a particularly strong set. Scott Yanow
