Cassandra Wilson nació en 1955 en Jackson (Mississippi). Estudió piano y guitarra con nueve años y a mediados de los 70 cantaba en los clubs un repertorio de clásicos del blues. Ha formado parte de diversas bandas de jazz y funk: M-Base Collective de Steve Coleman, Steve Coleman & The Five Elements y New Air.
Ha colaborado con Wynton Marsalis, Jacky Terrasson, David Sánchez, Terence Blanchard, Don Byron, Dave Holland, Javon Jackson, Courtney Pine, The Roots, Steve Turrentine …
