THE JEFF LORBER FUSION

THE JEFF LORBER FUSION * WATER SIGN

2004 release. Recorded in 1979, out of print for over a decade, and reissued in 2004. Jeff Lorber's major label debut, (he had two records on the Inner City label before this one), and an absolute fusion classic. Jeff Lorber, keys; Danny Wilson, bass; Dennis Bradford, drums; with Jay Koder, Doug Lewis, guitars; Freddie Hubbard, flugelhorn; Joe Farrell, flute; Dennis Springer; sax; and Bruce Smith, percussion.

BILLY COBHAM * SPECTRUM

BILLY COBHAM * SPECTRUM

2001 release. One of the greatest fusion albums of all time, recorded in 1973, remastered in 2001 from the original analogue tapes, and packaged in a digipack. Tommy Bolin at his absolute best surrounded by a truly amazing band.

Billy Cobham: drums, percussion
Tommy Bolin: guitar
Jan Hammer: piano, synthesizer
Lee Sklar: bass
Ron Carter: acoustic bass
Jimmy Owens: flugelhorn
Joe Farrell: flute, saxophones
Ray Barretto: congas
John Tropea: guitar (on “Le Lis”)

Recorded in 1973. If fusion had a top 25 of all time this recording would have to be included. Tommy Bolin playing at his best surrounded by a truly amazing band.

review by Joe McGlinchey

Smoking-cannon solo debut from the drummer of the Mahavishnu Orchestra. The compositions are fast 'n' fierce fusion, more directly steeped in soul and the blues than the MO's. This means the harmonic vocabulary and general song structures are simpler, not as flamboyant or classical-sounding as Cobham's previous band. But Spectrum's pieces are by no means less fiery, and the virtuosic intricacies on this disc are sure to knock prog fans of that persuasion like bowling pins right into the gutter. Along for the ride here are: fellow disgruntled Mahavishnu departee Jan Hammer on keys; the late, cult-legend Tommy Bolin on guitars; and Lee Sklar (that's right, the same guy who would later show up on Phil Collins' wimpy 80s solo albums), flexing much more muscle on bass. Particularly noteworthy are the tracks "Quadrant 4," "Spectrum" (the bass riff of which was later sampled by Massive Attack for "Safe" from their album Blue Lines), and the laid-back "Red Baron." This stuff would probably have been earth-shaking with McLaughlin. Nonetheless, Bolin fills some big shoes without blinking an eye, inserting smoldering solos left and right. One downside to this album is that drum solos are inserted before each of the 'main' tracks, but thankfully these only each last about a minute or so. A great purchase for the Mahavishnu fan, just don't expect any Indian scales, Bartok harmonies, or anything like that.

BUNNY BRUNEL * IVANHOE

BUNNY BRUNEL * IVANHOE

Recorded in 1982. Second solo project has Bunny playing different types of basses with an all star cast. Bunny Brunel, basses; Stanley Clarke, bass (one track); Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Kei Akagi, Daniel Goyone, Ken Shima, keys; Michael O'Neill, Bernard Torrelli, guitar; Bill Watrous, trombone; Joe Farrell; Steve Kujala, sax; Al Vizzutti, trumpet; Tom Brechtlein, Tony Williams, Jean Paul Ceccarelli, drums; Don Alias, Laudir De Oliveira, percussion; Nani Villa Brunel, vocals (2 tracks).

Aretha Franklin - 30 Greatest Hits

Personnel includes: Aretha Franklin (vocals, piano); Chips Moman, Jimmy Johnson, Eddie Hinton, Jerry Weaver, Charlie Freeman, Hugh McCracken, Cornell Dupree, Don Arnone, David Spinozza (guitar); Joe Farrell (flute, tenor saxophone); Hubert Laws (flute); The Memphis Horns (horns); Spooner Oldham (electric piano, organ); Richard Tee, Ken Lupper (organ); Barry Beckett, Jim Dickinson, Mike Utley, Donny Hathaway (keyboards); Kenneth Bichel (synthesizer); Tommy Cogbill, David Hood, Tommy McClure, Eric Gale, Chuck Rainey (bass), Roger Hawkins, Sammy Creason, Al Jackson, Ray Lucas, Bernard Purdie, Rick Marotta (drums); Pancho Morales (congas); Robert Popwell, Doctor John, Ralph MacDonald (percussion); Erma Franklin, Carolyn Franklin, The Sweet Inspirations, The Sweethearts Of Soul, The Southern California Community Choir (background vocals); Joe South.
Producers: Jerry Wexler, Tom Dowd, Arif Mardin, Aretha Franklin, Quincy Jones.
Compilation producer: Kim Cooke.
The title may not be 100-percent accurate, since the songs here are culled from Franklin`s soul years, roughly between 1967 and 1974, and she`s had lots more hits since then. That nit picked, however, this is a genuine embarrassment of riches, with Aretha`s soaring voice and under-appreciated piano decorating one wonderful genre-defining song ("Respect," "Chain of Fools," "Natural Woman," "Since You`ve Been Gone") after another. The most revelatory cut is probably "I Say a Little Prayer," in which Franklin imbues the song with a spine-tingling gospel flavor without ever losing the pop delicacy of the original Dionne Warwick version. But just about everything else here is essential listening.

Balaklava

The anti-war album

One of the best albums. The breathing on 'Translucent Carriages' is chilling and the birds on 'Images of April' gives the song an atmosphere matching the horror of the albums cover: 'Triumph of Death' by Pieter Bruegel (Dutch 1526-1596). Note the quote from George Santayana: "Only the dead have seen the end of war"
